February 8, 2008 Board Meeting Minutes

Board Members Present: Phyllis Calvert, Iris Allen, Betsy Phillips, Barbara Nash, Bill Symonds, Barbara Parker, Gary Davis, Danielle Booker-Perry, Carla Lively and Donn Schnarr.

The SHRM Board met on February 8, 2008, at Famous Anthony’s on Wards Road. President, Betsy Phillips, called the meeting to order at 8:15 am.

Betsy Phillips went over the January meeting evaluation results. She stated that there were positive feedback from January evaluations and fair comments were made on food. We will not have beef tips in the future.

Betsy Phillips discussed the 2008 Programs. We are still working on October and November meeting. We have many good things in the works. We plan to have two HRCI chapter meetings for 2008.

Gary Davis will provide the door prize for February.

Discussion was made concerning the June meeting with EAC. Delores Esser, VEC Commissioner, will be the keynote speaker. There are some concerns about location. We need to check with James River Conference Center.

Betsy will follow-up with Kimberly McIvor about a list of topics to be discussed and inform her that we are considering locations and will discuss at our next board meeting.

Betsy attended the First Quarter State Council Meeting Review on 1/25/08 in Winchester. This was a good meeting with strong attendance. Each chapter shared their highlights and there was a strong focus that the state council & many chapters have with workforce readiness.

A new initiative for 2008 is Enterprising Leadership. By October, each chapter will send in a story that outlines what has been accomplished relating to enterprising leadership. These stories will then be made into a book that will be given out at the Leadership Conference in November.

Our success with new HR programs with CVCC & expanding that program to be promoted at the high school level with our Partners in Ed program may be something we want to consider as our Enterprising Leadership initiative.

There was also a presentation by Goodwill representatives from Washington DC. They are working on enhancing their training programs & customizing them more per region. They are working on a VA survey to identify issues that may be preventing candidates from being hired. For example, if a major concern for a particular area is not dressing appropriately for an interview, then Goodwill wants to enhance their training in that particular city as it relates to dressing for an interview. State Council will move forward to see how we can assist with this initiative.

Betsy has printed the 2008 CAP Planning Workbook but has not read yet. She will get with board members and committee chairs individually to review.

Betsy has met with several board members to review volunteer responsibilities and receive feedback regarding any chapter goals of interest. Some of the input so far has been the possibility of offering a workshop not only geared for our membership but also for smaller businesses in the area that may not have a HR department. It was also suggested that we consider having a quarterly newsletter.

Betsy stated that we need an auditor to audit our finances. This person will check the Treasurer’s financial spreadsheet and sign off monthly. It was suggested that this could be someone who may want to be Treasurer next year as Bill’s term is ending. Anyone interested should contact Bill for details on the position.

    Officer and Chair Reports

Due to some member feedback regarding length of our monthly meetings and also because not everyone has a report to give at each meeting, Betsy suggested that at the Chapter Meetings we always do the Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership reports. She will ask all others to raise their hand if they have a report and if so, she will recognize them for their report. For the Legislative report, we will hit only the hot topics and refer members to the Website for details. All agreed.

Iris reminded the board to submit pictures for the newspaper.

Bill provided the Preliminary Budget for the projected year. Biggest change is under misc. which will cover Betsy’s travel expenses.

Danielle stated that she has sent out 23 information packages but has not received much feedback. At the Chapter Meeting she will announce details about membership and provide a form to update membership information (changes only).

Betsy gave the Education report for Barb Nash. The Partners in Ed meeting with Lynchburg City schools will be 2/21/08 at Famous Anthony to plan for the April meeting and next business spotlight at Belvac on 3/3.

It was suggested that we send the Local Business Spotlight announcement to our membership in an effort to increase the number of SHRM members that attend. We all agreed that the spotlight is more for the guidance counselors but it would be nice to have more membership representation (if any members are interested) to encourage networking between employers and the schools.

Barbara Parker stated that the Student Chapter will participate in two events:

    1. VA State HR Games on March 29 at James Madison University. This is a Jeopardy Game Competition with questions based on the HR body of knowledge.

    2. Student Regional Conference in Knoxville, TN on April 18-19. The Student Chapter is seeking financial help from SHRM to assist them with funds for the trip to Knoxville. One suggestion is to direct the funds collected from a 50/50 raffle at the next two monthly meetings to go toward the student chapter's trip to the conference.

Colleen McLaughlin, the student chapter faculty coordinator, said that Liberty University has developed a HR Specialty within the Graduate MBA Business Curriculum and moving to get approval to do the same in the undergraduate program. The chapter is also preparing for their 45 minute presentation for the March monthly meeting.

Barbara stated that a new certification class has started with four people from VA Tech and five from the Lynchburg area.

Discussion was held about networking and meeting times. We also discussed the charge to visitors at our monthly meetings. It was agreed that all visitors that are prospective members will pay the member rate of $15 and all visitors that are not prospective members will pay the non-member rate of $20. Betsy will send an email to membership to clarify networking and meeting times and to explain the charges for visitors.

Betsy recognized February birthdays (Danielle Booker-Perry, Bill Symonds and Sandy Justis) and presented Danielle and Bill with a gift.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:35 a.m.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Iris H. Allen

    Iris Allen, Secretary
