    Topic: Windmills Disability Training - The Power of Inclusion:

    Profiles:  This exercise involves the evaluation of job matches with a person with a disability.  Participants are made aware of the problems that arise when placing people into positions based on their inability as opposed to their ability to perform the work.

    Fact or Fiction – Participants review their knowledge about disabilities.  The goal is to become more comfortable and effective in workplace interactions with people with disabilities. 

     

    Objectives:

    • To introduce stereotypes and assumptions often associated with people with disabilities
    • Identifies problems in placing people with disabilities on a job by evaluating their inability as opposed to their abilities
    • Demystifies myths about people with disabilities in the workplace
    • To familiarize participants with basic disability employment law.

     

    Speaker: Beth Sullivan & Tom Woodard - DARS

    Beth Sullivan has been supporting businesses with recruitment and retention services for over 30 years and has been relied on to offer a diverse pool of qualified applicants.  Businesses have trusted her to examine and understand their unique culture and workforce demands, and have utilized her experience assisting them with tax incentives, candidate screening and linking them to a large network of local workforce resources.  She prides herself on “being there for as long as the person is employed”. 

    Beth serves on 5 area Business Services Teams whose mission is to provide a comprehensive and timely response to the needs of business in the local community. She began her career with the Va Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services as a Vocational Counselor, where she quickly identified her passion for assisting businesses with developing a talent pipeline and diversifying their workforce.  This led to the management of Workforce Specialists, Assistive Technology Specialists, Vocational Evaluators and Career Counselors.  She has devoted the last 6 years as a Business Development Manager supporting businesses to the Blue Ridge and Central regions of the state. 

    Beth was born and raised in Amherst County, and earned her degree at Longwood University and her Masters of Vocational Rehabilitation from VCU.  Beth enjoys the mountains, hiking, rafting, and all activities outdoors.  Her newest passion is her first Grandson who she brags is the “smartest, cutest, most wonderful child” ever!  

     

    Tom Woodward is the Job Placement Counselor for the Lynchburg DARS field office and has worked in vocational rehabilitation in central Virginia since 2017.  Tom’s past work experience includes sales and management positions in the Hampton Roads and Richmond areas of the Commonwealth. Tom lives with his wife Sherri in Amherst County, and he is a graduate of Longwood University.
