    Topic: Windmills: Employment Disability Inclusion Training

    Many organizations would like to employ persons with disabilities but find that fears, biases and myths create barriers in the hiring process. The Windmills training program focuses on attitudes and human factors, while addressing concerns including legal requirements and accommodation. This presentation will review and discuss how Windmills trainings have served as an important and effective business engagement tool for educating leaders within private and public sectors resulting in the establishment of collaborative partnerships, increased employment opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities, and an increase in success employment outcomes for Individuals with Disabilities.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Understand what Windmills training is and how it can be utilized as an effective tool to expand the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development individuals with disabilities.
    • Learn how Windmills training can create opportunities for collaborative partnership that result in increased employment opportunities and successful employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities.
    • Learn how to connect with the DARS Business Services Team to develop a Windmills training program for a business or organization you are working with.
    • Learn how you can becomes a certified Windmills trainer.

    Nate Mahanes – Business Development Manager, Virginia Dept. for Aging & Rehabilitative Services (DARS) 

    Beth Groff – Business Development Manager, Virginia Dept. for Aging & Rehabilitative Services (DARS)

    Nate Mahanes is a Business Development Manager for DARS providing services to the Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Fishersville and Culpeper field offices.

    Nate’s primary function is to serve as liaison between the agency and the business community in order to promote awareness, increase education and develop public/private partnerships that increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

    Nate received the Virginia Community College System Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Workforce Development and was recognized as one of Lynchburg Business Magazine's "Top 20 Under 40."  He has also served on the board of directors for the Lynchburg Regional Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management since 2015.

    Beth Groff is the DARS business liaison for the areas of Roanoke, Martinsville, Danville and South Boston.  Beth has been supporting businesses with recruitment and retention services for over 20 years and has been relied on to offer a diverse pool of qualified applicants.  Businesses have trusted her to examine and understand their unique culture and workforce demands, and have utilized her experience assisting them with tax incentives, candidate screening and linking them to a large network of local workforce resources.  She prides herself on “being there for as long as the person is employed”.  Beth serves on 5 area Business Support Teams whose mission is to provide a comprehensive and timely response to the needs of business in the local community. She began her career with DARS as a Vocational Counselor, where she quickly identified her passion for assisting businesses with developing a talent pipeline and diversifying their workforce.  This led to the management of Workforce Specialists, Assistive Technology Specialists, Vocational Evaluators and Career Counselors. 

    Beth was born and raised in the Lynchburg area where her Grandfather has a designated seat at the Hillcats Stadium.  She has lived the last 30+ years in the Richmond area where she is enjoying her first grandchild.
