Topic: Marijuana and the Workplace: What’s New for 2021?

Employers have been struggling with confusing marijuana laws for years—and the rules are getting tougher to navigate as more states add employment protections.

Learners will gain knowledge, insight, and answers to the following:

    • New developments with drug testing and marijuana laws
    • April 21, 2021, VA Gov. Ralph Northam signed a bill legalizing simple marijuana possession for adults. What will be the effects will be in the workplace?
    • Are there local employers who are not permitted to screen new hires for marijuana for pre-employment purposes
    • Is VA a state that allows marijuana for medicinal use also? Are we seeing any implications in the workplace?
    • Do you find more and more employers are limiting pre-employment marijuana screening?
    • Off-duty recreational marijuana use and its impact on the workplace
    • What does it mean to be a registered marijuana medical patient? If this person is involved in an on-the-job accident, does the employer waived the post-accident drug test?
    • Should employers who are struggling with filling vacant positions relax their pre-employment drug screening standards amidst new legislation?
